Works by Nicole Williams

Another pretty good job and career information website (especially for women) is "Works by Nicole Williams". It's another general job search and career success website that is full of tips and great information that can help anyone succeed. It is geared toward women - but guys, if you can get over the girly presentation, there's smart advice there that can apply to you. Check it out here.

Lindsey Pollack - Gen Y Career Expert

I found this website while browsing the FNC videos in the previous post. It is published by Lindsey Pollack an expert on Career development and is the author of 2 books, one entitled "Getting from College to Career" and the other "The Savvy Girl's Guide to Online Networking (or What Would Jane Austin Do?)". She has some good advice, and some great videos of her own, so check it out here.

Fox News Channel Jobs/Career Videos

Fox News has a section of videos they have produced to provide helpful information about job searching. The latest is viewable here. This video is about networking, and there are more videos accessible at the bottom of the page.

MarketingHeadhunter.com

I ran across an interesting blog the other day that has a lot of information about job searching. It is geared toward high level professionals and executives, but the principles apply to everyone looking for a job. I recommend spending some time browsing this site for advice on interviewing, resumes, cover letters, etc. I did find some crude language here and there, but not a lot. Anyhow, check it out here. When I get time later, I will post links to soem specific items that I found very interesting. more on that later.

Glassdoor.com Adds New Feature

I have previoulsy posted comments about information asymmetry in negotiations - that having enough of the right information is crucial to successful negotiation. Glassdoor.com is an intriguing website that can help equalize the playing field and help you get an edge when it comes down to negotiating the salary for a new position. It's full of anonymous user shared salary ranges and employee  reviews of managing executives of a growing list of notable corporations.

Recently, Glassdoor.com added a new feature where users who have interviewed at these companies share their interview experiences and questions they were asked. This information can be extremely helpful, so give Glassdoor.com a look if yo haven't done so already. Glassdoor is a fairly new site, so not every company you're interested in will have information about it posted, in fact it's not really helpful for finding out specific internal info on a smaller business, but it will help you research industry standard salary ranges and give you an idea what you should expect to be paid for your experience and skillset.

Jist Job Search Videos on Youtube

Jist Publishing, the creators of the Jist Job Search and Career Blog, have a YouTube channel with several helpful jobsearch and career development tips. These YouTube segments are samples of job search and self help videos they sell on DVD. Check them out here

LinkedIn Tips

Everyone I talk to about job-seeking strategies hears about LinkedIn, a popular professional networking tool available on the internet. It is by far the best online tool I have seen for managing you professional contacts and utilizing them for expanding you most important resource for finding employment opportunities. Today I ran across a website which focuses on how LinkedIn users are using the LinkedIn networking tool. It is called Linked Intelligence. Of note is the page on 100+  ways to use LinkedIn. Also of note is the "Ten Ways to Use LinkedIn" by Guy Kawasaki. These are good places to get ideas on how to use LinkedIn in ways you may not have explored.

Also, remember that any kind of online networking site is only a tool that assists with networking, and shouldn't be confused with networking itself. Networking is the art of building and maintaining alliances, or relationships. Online tools can be effective contact management and search tools. But they are limited tools for building relationships, which is best done face to face. You want people in your network to know you and what you can do. So, use LinkedIn and the other online tools to help you:

  • Find new people to meet, so they can get to know you
  • Stay in contact with people you already know and help them to get to know you better
Good luck and call or email me with any questions.

Useful Interviewing Tips from ABC News

This ABC News video contains some useful tips for getting ready for that all important job interview. In summary:

Apply directly for specific positions, beyond submitting a resume to an online database.
Once you apply, do not wait for companies to call you. Get a name of a decision maker at the company via research on the internet and follow-up with a call if possible

In the interview, don't say generic things about yourself, avoid focusing on personal economic woes or the job search. Talk about the interesting things you are doing, (and though it's not in the video, use your Coat of Arms and 30 Second Statements to focus on what your skills and talents are.)

Use good posture and body language. Avoid annoying nervous habits. Smile! Use good posture, relax and be pleasant.

Have some questions of your own to ask in the interviews. Your research of the company will lead you to the right questions to ask.

Remain optimistic as possible. Avoid pessimism.

The Principle of Information Asymmetry

Information Asymmetry is a concept that I first read about in a book entitled Freakonomics by Stephen J. Dubner and Steven D. Leavitt. It's not a new concept. It's been around awhile. In economics, information asymmetry is where one party in a transaction has more or better information than the other. Think of the last time you shopped for a used car. Did you feel like the seller had more information than you? How did that affect your willingness to buy? Buyers, when they have the right information are able to recognize fair value in a purchase and protect themselves from losing money.

Information asymmetry affects both buyers and sellers. As a seller, If you do not have the right or equal amount of information about what you are selling, you will not get a fair price, or worse, you will not recognize a good offer when you get it. The asymmetry of information skews the transaction, giving advantage to the party with more or better data.

So, what does this have to do with your job hunt? Market principles apply to job hunting because there is a market for good employees out there. Of course the market is competetive, and any way you can get more, better, and more timely information, the better advantage you will have over your competitors. Your ability to give employers more, better, and timely information about yourself (as in creating an effective resume) is just as important. And finally, the information you can research and learn about your industry, the employer's needs, the market for your skills and salary ranges for which you qualify can greatly help in that final stage of getting a job - negotiating your salary.

Therefore, anything you can do to eliminate information asymmetry against you (and better yet, create asymmetry for yourself)  can greatly impact your success. Over the years, the internet has become a useful tool in helping equalize the availability of information for buyers and sellers in all kinds of markets, including the job market. Some of these tools include:

The authors of the book Freakonomics maintain a blog on economics and related information which you can find here.

Rich Sevey seeks 20 Advertising Sales Reps

Rich Sevey is looking for 20 advertising sales reps. See below:

"I have just signed a deal with an ad company known as Fizook who is establishing themselves pretty well in Utah and is wanting to open up here.  I am now their Maricopa county licensee and I am in serious need of 20 seasoned sales reps that can sell advertizing. They could be out of insurance sales, auto sales and so forth but I think its best for sure for them to have the sales background.  I basically have divided Maricopa county into 20 areas and so its probably best if they perform in the area or close to where they live.  The first years income model for a typical sales rep is about $45k first year, $80 2nd, 120 3rd and 150 4th."
